Dear Members & Friends
“Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” --John 1:45
My daughter Macyn has been hard at work the last few months. Nearly every night during our reading time she works on wooden puzzles for toddlers. At first she would take the pieces and throw them across the room (occasionally at her brother or the cats). Then she began taking the pieces and matching them up with the correct slot. She kept working and she learned how to get the cow, lamb, and dog in the correct place, but she still struggled with certain pieces. This last week she has been able to put the whole puzzle together as well as other new puzzles my wife and I have given her. Completing the first puzzle gave her the confidence to master new ones.
The bible can often seem like a puzzle, and without instruction we often do what Macyn did at first—we throw the bible on the coffee table, or on the book shelf, but hopefully not at the cat. When it comes to the Old Testament the situation gets more complicated; sometimes reading the Old Testament feels like working on a 5000 piece puzzle face down. It’s all too easy to disregard the Old and move right into the New, but there’s a problem with this type of thinking. If we disregard the Old Testament it’s like taking a huge section out of the mystery of Jesus Christ. We will never fully comprehend all that Jesus did on the cross and his resurrection without getting a full picture.
This Lenten season I strongly urge you to come to church as we venture into the Old Testament in our series ‘The Old Points to the New.’ Each week we will be going through stories in order to show how the Old Testament speaks to what Jesus did for us that Easter morning. If you struggled with the Old Testament in the past or have been looking to deepen your faith I encourage you to come and experience a very user friendly understanding the major events that make up the Old Testament. Please take time to check out the sermon series insert found in this newsletter.
For those who aren’t able to attend I encourage you to cherish this season of Lent and the time of Easter because this is what it is all about. Take time to get right with God during the Lenten season and rejoice in what Christ has done for us on Easter morning. Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again. Those who have been adopted into the family of God share in this same resurrection.
As you go through these months remember that faith is like a puzzle that requires patience and persistence. Once we understand something of the nature of God He shows us that there is still more to learn. None of us will ever fit all the pieces of our faith together, but every time as we work on deepening it we begin to see more clearly the face of God in all our life. Take time to slow down and renew your faith in Jesus Christ during this holy season.
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
Pastor Tim
